Michaela Walsh waltzes into World Championship last 16

Michaela Walsh cruised into the last 16 of the World Women’s Elite last 16 today.

Walsh made it three wins out of three for Ireland in Ulan-Ude, Siberia today.

The Belfast feather beat Mali’s Carmara Fatoumata on a landslide unanimous decision to join Cavan’s Ceire Smith and Cork’s Christina Desmond in the last 16 in Russia.

The dominant European Games silver medal winner claimed victory by a wide and convincing 30-25,30-25,30-25,30-25,30-26 score.

The brave but mostly outclassed West African took a standing count in the third from a right with Walsh, occasionally switching to southpaw, repeatedly finding the target with head and body shots and avoiding most of the incoming.

The Commonwealth Games medal winner- who some deem Ireland’s form amateur at present – now meet Russia’s Liudmila Vorontsova on Tuesday morning for a place in the quarter-finals.

Ulan-Ude-native and reigning Russian champion, Vorontsova beat Germany’s Ramona Graeef today.

Meanwhile, Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst faces top Germany’s Youth prospect Maya Kleinhans in the last 32 tomorrow.

Former Irish coach Eddie Bolger, the current German coach, will be working Kleinhans corner.

Ireland and Germany shared the spoils in a see-saw Schoolboy/girl international in Germany tonight.

Both sides meet again tomorrow evening at the same venue. Saturday’s weigh-ins begin at 4pm and boxing starts at 6pm (local time).

In three additional bouts on tonight’s card, current Irish Elite champion Kieran Molloy scored an inside the distance win over German welter Andre Werner but Colm Quinn was edged on a 2-1 split by Johannes Hickmann.

Annemarie Jugend earned a decision over Rachael Desmond in the Youth class.
