Ireland lose out on final day of European Schoolboys Championships

There was no joy today for Ireland in the finals of the European Schoolboys Championships in Romania.

Three Irish were in the finals against Russian opposition and all three fell to tight defeats in bouts that could have perhaps gone their way.

First up was Olympic BC’s Patrick Sweeney at 46kg who was extremely unlucky to lose to Sergey Koldenikov on a split.

There was another split loss for his 50kg clubmate Patrick Donovan who was given two first round counts against Evegeny Zhorov but looked to have been on top for much of the contest.

Ballyhaunis 59kg Eoghan Lavin was then defeated on a unanimous decision by Sergei Egorov following another hugely competitive contest.

Ireland will arrive home from Valcea tomorrow with seven bronze and three silver medals.
