Four Irish boxers to fight for medals tomorrow at European Junior Championships

Callum Walsh, Dean Clancy and Thomas Doherty posted impressive wins at the European Junior Championships in Albena, Bulgaria today to join Jude Gallagher in the quarter-finals.

But Peter Vrinceanu and Patrick Doherty lost to Russian opponents on split and unanimous decisions.

Clancy out-punched Armenia’s Artur Shahakyan in a fiery contest to earn a well-deserved 4-1 decision and Walsh was well on top versus Racz Kristopher in the 60kg class.

The Hungarian lightweight, to his credit, kept plugging away until the final bell, but Walsh consistently found the target with solid head and body shots in all three rounds.

Doherty met Turkish southpaw Sahin Ergul in the 22nd and final bout on today’s program, the Irish light-heavy getting the better of an open and entertaining bout to book his ticket into the last-eight.

Vrinceanu is unlucky, to say the least, not to be involved in Friday’s semi-finals. The Dubliner more than matched Anatalii Fedotkin in every department, but three of the five judges leaned toward the Russian light-welter.

A win for McCarthy, who put in a massive effort today, would have guaranteed at least bronze in the first bout featuring Ireland this afternoon, but Vakhaev Mukhaed progressed.

Gallagher, Clancy, Walsh and Doherty are back between the ropes tomorrow each one win away from at least bronze.
