Christina McMahon set for new Dublin World Title fight

Christina McMahon [7(3)-2(0)] looks set to fight for a world title, in Ireland, in the new year.

The Monaghan super flyweight was due to fight WBA champion Linda Laura Lecca at the National Stadium at the weekend, but saw the Peruvian pull out.

It was another frustrating blow for McMahon who has suffered all manner of setbacks during her time as a professional boxer. From fights falling through, to fights at too high a weight, to dodgy officiating, World title honours have so far eluded the 42 year old.

McMahon’s willingness following the withdrawal of Lecca to move up or down weight at short notice to facilitate a world title fight endeared her to the top brass at the WBA and she now looks set to be rewarded with a home title shot in the new year

The Carrickmacross boxer confirmed yesterday on RTÉ’s Sunday Sport that she will fight for a world title in March 2017 at the home of Irish boxing, The National Stadium in Dublin.

While contracts are still to be signed and with details currently thin on the ground, McMahon outlined how the fight will take place “around the first three weeks in March. Definitely [in on couse Ireland], and in the National Stadium, I think is the talk at moment.”

Two avenues are being considered at the moment, and McMahon’s husband and coach, Martin, added that “there’s a possibility, although it’s not been signed up yet, that it will be for the vacant WBA flyweight title.”

“Around Paddy’s Weekend some time.”

The current WBA Women’s flyweight rankings are as follows:
1. Raja Amasheh 19(4)-1(0) Germany
2. Isabel Millan 17(8)-2(1)-1 Mexico
