Amir Khan wants John Joe Nevin to mirror his world title winning success

By Jonny Stapleton

AMIR Khan is rumoured to be very fond of himself, so considering he see’s so much of himself in John Joe Nevin it should come as no surprise he made the London 2012 Olympic silver medalist the number one target for his new promotional company.

‘King Khan’ beat a number of promoters to the punch and officially signed the much sought after Cavan BC amateur to his new promotional company Super Promotions on Saturday.

And having been impressed with how the ‘Mullingar Shuffler’ emulated his Olympic success the former World champion has vowed to ensure the Irish fighter now mimics his pro achievements.

Like Nevin, 23, the Bolton native claimed Olympic silver, but as a 17 year old in 2004. He followed up his amateur success by becoming two-belt world champion and was even in the pound for pound reckoning before his second knock out defeat early this year. And the regular Stateside bill topper and household name believes he can help two time amateur world medalist, Nevin become a two belt world champion just like him.

“He was the first person I wanted to sign. I saw so much of myself in John Joe and was so impressed with him at the Olympics,” Khan revealed. “ He has a tough road ahead, but he’s slick, moves well and has a lot of attributes that I know will take him very far as a
professional. I’m extremely pleased that we have managed to bring him to Super Fight Promotions because he’s exactly the type of young, exciting and gifted talent we want under our banner. We have high hopes for him and under Super Fight Promotions he will have the best platform in which to fulfil his enormous potential.”
