Aaron McKenna Secures World Title Shot

Aaron McKenna has secured a coveted world shot.

The Monaghan man will challenge for the IBF middleweight world title in his next fight.

The governing body, which has Lewis Crocker as its champion at welterweight, has ordered ‘The Silencer’ and Oliha Etinosa to fight for the vacant 160lbs belt.

The fighter’s teams have 30 days to come to an agreement, or purse bids will be called.

Janibek Alimkhanuly is the most recent holder of the title but was stripped after failing a drug test in the build-up to his unification clash with former Spike O’Sullivan opponent Erislandy Lara in December.

The Smithsborough native has been calling for a shot for some time and just when it looked like he was becoming frustrated with not being afforded the chance to build on his career-best win over Liam Smith, he has secured a world title shot.

If McKenna is to join Crocker and Anthony Cacace as a reigning Irish world champ, he will have to beat Etinosa. The Italian is undefeated, but the 27-year-old’s record certainly won’t scare the always confident boxing brother.
