Second Coming Countdown: Peter McDonagh -v- Dean Byrne

MGM return to Ireland this weekend and, ahead of the massive ‘Second Coming’ show at the National Stadium, irish-boxing.com is profiling all the Irish fighters who will be in action.

Here we take a look at the main support act on the card – the Irish welterweight title fight between Dean Byrne and Peter McDonagh.

Dean Byrne [17(6)-5(2)-2] has enough stories to fill a bookcase. The well-traveled Dubliner is a former Australian champion and spent time at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym, sparring the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan. After some problems outside the ring, ‘Irish Lightning’ is now looking to fulfill some of his World class potential. Supremely skilled, the 31 year old is looking for a big win in his first fight in Ireland for five years.

Galway’s McDonagh [24(3)-28(2)-1] is a popular figure and a real records-are-for-DJs boxer. After years spent as a journeyman, the 37 year old is going through a real Renaissance period in his career and, after a seven fight unbeaten run, he has been re-christened ‘The Cinderella Man.’ A two-weight Irish champ, MGM’s McDonagh will be looking to add a third strap to his collection on Saturday night.

The fight promises to be a tasty affair and there has been no shortage of trash-talk between the two in recent weeks.
