Sutherland back in training

Darren Sutherland has returned to training and the Irishman admits that he could not wait to get back in the gym.

The 26-year-old super-middleweight, who kicked off his professional career with an impressive first-round stoppage of Georgi Iliev in Dublin last month, took some time off over the festive period and took his parents and sister on a family holiday to Tenerife.

Sutherland enjoyed the break but is already looking forward to his second outing in the paid ranks, in Wigan on March 6.

“It was the longest period I have spent with my parents for years and we reflected on my success, the Beijing bronze medallist said of his vacation.

“I ran every day while I was in Tenerife except one. I needed routine because the only thing to do was eat and sunbathe.

“I was itching to get back to the gym by the start of the New Year and I’m glad I listened to my advisors and booked the trip or else I would not have gone.

“I would have headed back to London and started training for my next fight. I can’t wait to get back in the gym, even though I’ll be up at 5am every morning.”
