Ormond happy with win

14 March 2011 – Jonny Stapleton

Patience was a virtue that served Stephen Ormond well in his knock out victory over Mikey Coveney in Scotland last weekend, but it certainly isnt an asset the Clondalkin puncher wants to employ outside the squared circle over the coming months.

Ormond, who bided his time before stopping the tough and experienced former Patrick Hyland challenger in round seven of a clash on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ latest world title defence, doesnt want to hang around and is planning a title assault in his next outing. The Irish super featherweight has received plenty of plaudits for his performances in a busy 2010, but wants to exchange winning rave reviews for winning belts over the next 12 months.

The 27 year old Frank Warrren promoted former amateur stand out, who is fast being adopted by Scot, Burns fans, told www.irish-boxing.com after his ninth win that he wants to buckle a belt around his waist when enters double fight figures in June or July. Ormond was obviously delighted he took the short route to victory over a fighter, who has also traded leather with Choi Tseveenpurev, Paul Appley and Derry Matthews, but was keen to look forward rather than back.

It was a good win and Frank and my corner were happy afterward. I initially tried to take him out early but he was tough. Pascal Collins (Ormonds Coach) told me to step back, relax and use my boxing more. I did that and got rounds under my belt. Once I started to use my boxing skill he had no answers. I used the jab, picked my shots and was hurting him with the left hook. I hurt him in the seventh and the referee was right to stop it. I am hitting harder now and I really felt good in the ring Saturday

It looks like I will be out again in June and now I have an eight rounder under my belt I want to fight for a title next. We were talking after the fight and I am confident I will get a title shot and step up further in one or two fights. There is a good chance I could get a bigger fight in June. Rickys fans seem to be taking to me and are impressed with my showings in the ring of late so I will fight on his next under card.
