Journalist catalogues Magee’s title journey

19 September 2010

When Brian Magee successfully defended his European super-middleweight title last weekend, the Lisburn southpaw gained some added company throughout his pre-fight preparations. Belfast journalist David Mohan covered all the build-up for the Belfast Media Group, printed last Friday as a fly on the wall feature article.

Below is an extract from Behind the scenes with a European champion, which is available in full in the September 18 sports supplement of the Andersonstown News:

I have always had a great respect for boxers. When I watch fights on TV or attended in person, I would sit in awe at the sheer levels of heart, desire and courage shown by those who stepped into the ring, not to mention the incredible levels of fitness required. So, when I was asked if I would like to write a fly on the wall feature on the preparations, build-up and behind the scenes on fight night for Brian Magees European super-middleweight title defence against Roman Aramian, I naturally jumped at the opportunity.

At that point I could only imagine what kind of work goes in to get a boxer ready for such an occasion but when my time with Team Magee was over, my admiration had only sky-rocketed.

Training Camp: Monday 30 August Wednesday 8 September

On a drizzly grey morning I make my first appearance at St Agnes ABC gym on the Andersonstown Road.
