Cork double on Day 2 of World Junior Championships

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Cork duo Eamer Coughlan and Tommy Hyde progressed to last-16 of the AIBA World Junior Championships in St Petersburg, Russia today.

But Jack Conroy and Eric Nash bowed out of the tournament despite big performances.

Coughlan convincingly beat Takik light-fly Dmitri Fominykh on a unanimous decision and will now meet England’s Lewis Cooley in the next phase.

Hyde followed that up with a unanimous decision over highly-rated Lithuanian light-middle Lukas Petrauskas.

“Absolutely buzzing, won 3-0 against Lithuania tonight! Delighted to get my first win for Ireland and through to the last 16 in the world championships. Thanks everyone for you support, it’s unreal,” said Hyde after his win.

Conroy boxed his heart out against talented Chinese light-welter Yibukayimu Mamuti, and Nash can consider himself to be very unlucky to have been on the wrong end of a split decision to Bulgaria’s Ivan Atanasov.

Craig Kavanagh, Joe Nevin, Paul Ryan and Sean Purcell will be in action tomorrow.
