Aaron McKenna secures short-notice bout as activity levels increase

Aaron McKenna will look to toast leaving his teens with a ninth professional win this month.

The Monaghan welterweight turned 20 on Saturday and the workaholic has been handed the perfect gift from promoters Golden Boy.

It has been confirmed that the California McKenna [8(5)-0] will box on Thursday July 18th at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio.

The fight comes less than a month after his second-round win over Daniel Perales at the same venue and the short turnaround between fights is a welcome move for a boxer who is hoping to claim world title honours before he turns 22.

The fight will be one of the support bouts for Jason Quigley’s NABF middleweight title defence versus Tureano Johnson. McKenna is a managerial stablemate of the Donegal middleweight under Sheer Sports.

The bout, a six rounder, McKenna’s third, will be shown live on the DAZN streaming platform in America and an opponent will be confirmed shortly.

McKenna said that “it’s great to be back in action so soon. I like to stay hungry and work hard in the gym so that I’m always ready. My next fight I will be even sharper and I’m looking forward to putting on a strong performance for my Irish, Mexician and American fans. See you all on July 18th.”

‘The Silencer’ is currently training in Santa Monica under South African coach Courage Tshabalala and his father, Fergal, alongside his older brother and 2(2)-0 lightweight Stevie.

Last month’s fight versus Perales was McKenna’s second of the year and it is intended for the Smithborough lad to box a further two times, at least, following next Thursday.
