Quinn makes world-title ambitions clear after Belfast victory

Conor Quinn believes he took a step along the world title path in Belfast last Saturday night.

‘Magnificent’ came through another demanding test on the Unleashed card, overcoming tough Mexican Pedro Delgado Gaytan in a physical contest that left him bloodied but looking towards bigger opportunities.

The Belfast wee man believes the level of opposition he is facing should put him in the conversation for meaningful ranking fights, with world-title contention firmly on his radar.

Indeed, he notes Jassiel Ramon Amador Gamez, who challenges Kenshiro Teraji for the WBO super flyweight world title in November, used Delgao Gaytan as a stepping stone to his shot

“There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be fighting them for the ranking belts, putting yourself in the world-title contention and then getting that shot, hopefully,” Quinn said.

“I actually think that the boy there that I just boxed, the last guy that beat him, he’s only had two losses. One of the guys that beat him just got a world-title shot the other day there against the Japanese guy, Kenshiro Teraji, who’s one of the undisputed champions of the world.

“So, if that guy just beat him and he’s just got that shot, I want to put myself in that same sort of mix.”

Quinn is under no illusions that a world-title opportunity won’t arrive overnight, but he believes the latest performance can help him take another step towards that ambition.

“Listen, I’m in no rush, I’m not silly. I know you’re not going to get them fights next or the fight after next, but I just want to be in contention for them.”

The Ulster Hall victory also reinforced Quinn’s status as a headline act, which can only help his big fight hopes. The 28-year-old wants keep building his profile on home soil and push to become the boxing capital of Europe’s main man.

“I’m also in a position now where I’m headlining these shows. It might be at the smaller venue, but it feels like my venue. Jamie [Conlan] is giving me the opportunity; he’s giving me the platform and he’s giving me these shows to headline and build a name for myself.

“So, I’m not going to get greedy and say I want this, this and this. I’m happy to do these every couple of months, keep building, keep growing the ranks.”
