Conor Quinn: “I can 100% become Belfast boxing’s next star”

Conor Quinn isn’t going to disagree with Jamie Conlan.

‘Magnificent’ echoes the fighter-turned-fighter-maker’s claim that he is ready to become Belfast boxing’s next star.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com last week, the former world title challenger said Quinn has what it takes to become the boxing mad city’s main man.

The fighter, who headlines at the Ulster Hall on Saturday night, concurs. The 28-year-old says he has the talent, team and fighting style to become Belfast boxing’s next star name.

“I completely agree,” he tells Irish-boxing.com when asked about Conlan’s comments.

“I know that with my talent, team and my fight style that I can 100% become the next star of Belfast boxing and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

It is a confident claim, but one made in the knowledge that with another headline assignment in front of his home crowd, he has the perfect platform to strengthen that reputation.

“I’m buzzing; headlining shows is always a great feeling, especially in a venue like the Ulster Hall!” he added.

Yet beneath the excitement lies a clear understanding that headline nights are about more than atmosphere. The Ryan Burnett-trained former Queensberry fighter is entering the contest with ambitions that stretch beyond this weekend, with title opportunities firmly in his sights.

“We are right there; this fight was potentially for one of the international ranking belts. Unfortunately, it didn’t get over the line, but that is definitely next,” he revealed.

The crowd was certainly entertained the last time the Hammer Boxing man took to the ring. A Fight of the Year contender ending in sensational knockout fashion.

“It was amazing, a 10th round KO after a Fight of the Year contender, I don’t think I could have written it better,” he said.

“I can take a lot away from it going into this fight. I know I can carry the power late into a fight but I also know that I can make fights easier and not play up to the crowd every time.”

Mexican, Pedro Delgado Gaytan, whom Quinn faces in the atmospheric venue this weekend, has a record that suggests he could make it an entertaining headline fight.

The former BBBofC Celtic Champion knows he’ll have to procude to get another win.

“I’m expecting a very hard test, a tough Mexican coming to cause an upset, it’s going to be a very tough test,” Quinn said.

It is a challenge he appears to relish.

“Every fight I have ever went into I expect a knockout win, this one is no different.”
