All eyes were on the first big title fight of 2016 on Saturday night at the York Hall in London which was screened live on Box Nation.
The fight between Champion Ryan Walsh & Challenger Darren Traynor for the British Featherweight Title was of particular interest to local fight fans, with the winner of the contest being ordered to face 22YO Belfast sensation James Tennyson within ninety days.
Champion Walsh held on to his title in spectacular fashion with a 5th round KO of the Aberdeen man Traynor.
So Walsh v Tennyson it is, what a mouth-watering fight it will be, it has all the markings of a classic, the up and coming starlet with a knock-out punch in either hand versus the experienced switch hitting southpaw who’s only defeat coming at the hands of current World Champion Lee Selby.
With the fight likely to go out to purse bids in early February at the next monthly meeting of the British Boxing Board of Control the fight looks likely to take place around April/May.
Local Promoter Mark Dunlop has expressed desire to stage the fight in Belfast and looks quite possible giving his recent success at land big fight here for his stable.
“It is very exciting time for the stable, Tennyson is not only a devastating puncher but a great boxer, he has been boxing since the age of 7 and is very well schooled, at 22 he is becoming a beast, a monster, Walsh will be 30 by the time they meet but could end up feeling much older after the contest” Added Mark Dunlop.
Tennyson’s however gambles everything as he looks so stay active when he appears on the undercard of James Fryers v Maxi Hughes British Super Featherweight Title Eliminator at the Europa Hotel, Belfast on Saturday 6th February.
“The Assassin” as Tennyson is better known now has scored 12KO’S in his 15 victories and faces the tough Journeyman Antonia Horvatic from Croatia. Horvatic has been in with all the top prospects and only failed to hear the final bell in 4 of his 32 previous contests and should give the Belfast contender the rounds he craves.
“I’ve been preparing for this opportunity for 15 years and I am grabbing it with both hands, 6th February in the Europa could be my last small hall show so I intend in giving my loyal fans a treat” said Tennyson.
The remainder of the MHD Promotions in association with A McLean Bookmakers card is made up with exciting prospects in exciting fights featuring undefeated Paul Hyland Jnr who goes for win number 10 against former Polish WSB fighter Jacek Wylezol, 2014 Commonwealth Games hotshot Joe Fitzpatrick, Tyrone McCullagh and Coalisland prospect Fergal McCrory.
