IT’S famed as the year the world is meant to end but Jamie Conlan claims 2012 will remembered as the ‘Year of the Conlan’s’ and not the year that brought Doomsday after he received news he like his brother Michael has massive fights to look forward to next year.
The eldest of the boxing brothers has secured a January 21 British title eliminator against former champion Paul Edwards.
Victory for the the John Breen trained fighter in Liverpool will see him face the winner of Chris Edwards and Shinny Bayaar’s British title fight and he hopes to become lord of the British and Commonwealth flyweights before the year is out. Whilst the Belfast professional has domestic domination on his agenda younger brother Michael Conlan is looking to make an impression on the global stage.
The St John Bosco amateur is one of three Irish boxers qualified for the London 2012 and is backed to make an impression at the Olympics next summer.
The brothers are keeping it in the family and  preparing each other for the their biggest tests to date.
“2012 is going be big with Mick going till the Olympics and me winning the British and Commonwealth titles. 2012 will be the year of the Conlans,” A confident Conlan told Mirror Sport.
“Mick will be my main sparring partner for this fight. He is getting ready for the seniors around the same time. They don’t get much harder than him so ill be ready for everything Edwards has got.”
If Conlan’s bold predictions are to come through he first has to overcome Edwards in his own backyard, but the Belfast fighter is confident and claims he has been waiting for this opportunity since he turned pro.
“It’s feels great to have a big break though fight finally secured. It’s the kind of fight I have been looking forward too since I turned pro. I am excited it is in Edwards backyard I love that thought of going into the Lions Den. It makes me more determined to win. Edwards is a good fighter. He can box and fight and has a lot of heart so am expecting a tough fight but I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
