The American Dream – Katie Taylor given US boost

Katie Taylor [1(1)-0] fights on a huge platform this coming Saturday.

The Bray super featherweight, just two weeks after her debut, boxes on the Anthony Joshua v Eric Molina undercard at the Manchester Arena.

Taylor faces Swiss-based Brazilian Viviane Obenauf [9(4)-1(0)] at the 21,000 capacity arena and the fight will be shown live on Sky Box Office.

Already a massive opportunity for Taylor, it looks now that the fight will be given an even bigger platform, with Eddie Hearn revealing today at the pre-fight press conference that the bout is in line to be shown on US cable network Showtime.

It is unclear whether the clash with Obenauf will be shown live in America. If so, it would suggest that Taylor’s six-by-two fight, originally intended to be a swing bout, will feature prominently on the card. The Showtime broadcast is scheduled to begin at 10:30pm (Irish time) so the Wicklow woman’s fight could certainly be squeezed in ahead of the Joshua bout, but it remains unconfirmed.

Even if the fight is to be shown on tape delay, it would seem likely that Matchroom will have Taylor fighting later in the night to ensure a greater atmosphere.

At this afrernoon’s press conference, Taylor described how
“it’s a privilege to share this platform with these boxers. This platform on Saturday is what I have been dreaming about performing on.”
