Mike Perez secures World title eliminator on Macklin undercard
CORK based Cuban Mike Perez is just one win away from a World title shot according to reports Stateside this week.
‘The Rebel’ will fight fellow unbeaten heavyweight Bryant Jennings in an World title eliminator ordered by the WBC.
The fight is set to take place on May 24 on the undercard of the proposed Daniel Geale vs Matthew Macklin middleweight clash live on HBO.
According to Perez’s promoters K2 the West Coast is the most likely destination for the card, but a venue has yet to be decided on.
The WBC have ordered that Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola will fight for the title vacated by the retirement of Vitali Klitschko a bout which will take place on May 10.
If Perez, who has only shown flashes of the promise he displayed as an amatuer, beats Jennings (18-0) next month he then becomes mandatory challenger for the winner of that May 10 fight.
Perez’s last outing was a draw with Carlos Takam in January, which was his first fight since his brutal unanimous decision victory over Magomed Abdusalamov, who was left brain damaged and in rehabilitation.
“I think that this is a great heavyweight fight between two guys who have both been on HBO before, and there’s been a lot of anticipation between Perez and Jennings fighting,” said Loeffler Perez’s Promoter.
“Now, this is finally going to happen as an eliminator, and the winner will finally get a shot at a heavyweight title fight.”
