Gabriel Dossen denied in Russia

Galway’s Gabriel Dossen saw his World Youth Championships campaign come to an end at the semi final stage this afternoon in Russia

The Olympic BC light welter took on Russian Sergei Margarian and was denied, losing a split decision to the home favourite.

Dossen made a strong start, playing matador to the Russian bull in the opener, and turning his man effectively.

The heavy-handed Margarian upped the tempo in the second, beginning to find the target on Dossen, taking the round to seemingly set up a grandstand finish.

Dossen came back strongly in the third, pot-shotting the onrushing Russian well in a close round to leave a tense wait for the scores.

The Irishman would be denied on the scorecard’s however, with the five tallies reading 29:28, 29:28, 23:29, 27:30, and a frankly ridiculous 26:30 from Egyptian judge Nagy Ismail.

16 year old Dossen now leaves Russia with a bronze medal in what was just his first major international tournament. Having exploded onto the scene this Summer, Dossen is certainly one to keep an eye out for in the coming years.
