DiBella:It took a freak of nature to beat Macklin

Matthew Macklin lost to a ‘super human freak of nature’ on St Patrick’s Day and still has plenty of heroic nights ahead of him, according to promoter Lou DiBella.

The world champ with a reputation for helping people out of the ring but hurting them in it stopped Macklin late on in a sold out MSG arena, but the duo’s promoter claims ‘Mack The Knife’ can take consolation in the fact he pushed a fighter of Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather ilk so close.

The New York based fight boss believes the Irish middleweight proved he belongs in the middleweight elite and assured us, he will secure Macklin big fights in the future.

“I thought Macklin executed an excellent gameplan and boxed beautifully for eight rounds, but Sergio’s a phenom. He turns it up a notch to that superhuman level when he’s in trouble.

“This was a physically and mentally gruelling fight, but what he proved is what I thought before it began. He is the second or third best middleweight in the world. Again Martinez is a freak of nature. He is a Roy Jones or Mayweather. He is a different level of fighter. Anybody else in the division Matthew can beat. Danny Geale for the middleweight title is an option but honestly he needs some time off. I am proud to be his promoter and I hope he is proud of his efforts tonight.”

DiBella is more than keen to secure Julio Cesar Chavez jnr as Martinez’s next opponent, but the protected Mexican seems to be avoiding the Argentine meaning Limerick’s Andy Lee might get a chance.

I would rather fight Andy Lee again and sell the place out here again than fight some of the names been mentioned,” Di Bella added.
