Connor Coyle continues climb with Florida title fight
Connor Coyle [7(2)-0] has had his first title fight confirmed, and the Derry middleweight will come face to face with his opponent this weekend.
‘The Kid’ will box for the NBA Inter-Continental belt on Saturday June 16th at the Coliseum in St Petersburg, Florida, where he will face Orlando’s Danny Pastrana.
Coyle returns to his boxing base of Florida this week and will provide commentary on Fite.tv for the Fire Fist show in Clearwater on Saturday and the Foylesider will go head-to-head with Pastrana here – in the ring right before the main event.
The card this weekend is headlined by a lightweight ten-rounder between William Silva and Rogelio Caserez.
27-year-old Coyle turned pro in 2016, linking up with former Winky Wright trainer Jim McLoughlin and relocating to Florida – where five of his seven fights have taken place. In November he scored a big eight-round win over unbeaten Golden Gloves champion Calvin Metcalf in an off-TV fight on a Premier Boxing Champions card and will now take centre stage on June 16th.
The Florida-based NBA is not a major boxing governing body, however it offers Coyle the chance to test the waters at ten rounds for the first time as well as giving him the experience of fighting under championship conditions.
29-year-old ‘El Bebo’ Pastrana returned from a four-and-a-half year ring hiatus back in July with a second-round stoppage loss to Manny Woods.
