Willie Casey could face former European Champion Rendall Munroe in a World title fight if both men are succesful in title challenges in the coming weeks.
Casey faces Kiko Martinez in November for the continental crown Munroe vacated earlier this year. Whilst in October, Munroe squares off with Toshiaki Nishioka for the WBC title.
Now Munroe’s promoter Frank Maloney has said that if both men emerge victorious, there is no reason why a clash between the two cannot be arranged. Especially as he believes his man would emerge victorious
We see that one down the road yes, Willie has come a long way in a short time and I would think it might come a bit early for him,” said Maloney. He didnt have the best amateur record but hes a tough kid and yes we would look at that possibility. I dont see him causing Rendall any problems really.
For his part, Casey’s coach Phil Sutcliffe is adamant that Casey is focused only on Kiko Martinez.
Willie is an exceptional talent, and I would agree with Frank, his style certainly does suit the pro game a lot more then the amateurs,” he said.
Were just trying to keep him focused but yes its nice to hear names like Rendall Munroe associated with Willie but for now hes focused on the Kiko Martinez fight and taking The European Title home to Limerick. Down the road, of course but it may be a little early. All this hype surrounding him (Willie) is great but well be keeping him grounded. We wish Rendall all the best in his fight in October, if he takes that title home itll only add more spice to the super-bantam catch in the UK and Ireland.
Casey refuses to be drawn on the matter, I am 100 per cent focused on my fight with Kiko, once I beat him, Ill be focused on my next fight,” he said. “Any fights down the road are far from my thoughts right now. Rendall is a top class fighter but if he was put in front of me, of course I would be confident of beating him.
