“Challenge Accepted” – Spike O’Sullivan moves close to David Lemieux showdown

Spike O’Sullivan is up for it.

The Cork middleweight has today confirmed that he is willing to face former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux [39(33)-4(2)] on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez’s middleweight title rematch in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday September 15th.

In a short video message posted on Twitter, O’Sullivan [28(20)-2(1)] stated:

David Lemieux, challenge accepted. Be careful what you fucking wish for!

This specific message was in response to a video sent by Lemieux late last week.

The Canadian had stated:

O’Sullivan, let’s go. Stop chickening out, the fight to be is you versus me Lemieux versus O’Sullivan, so let’s do it.

Undercard of Canelo-Golovkin in September let’s go, are you ready to fight me? I’m here, let’s do this

O’Sullivan, who is now under the Golden Boy banner – promoters of the September 15th event and challenger Canelo – has long been known to be on the card in Nevada and is set to act as the chief support on a bill which also is set to feature the likes of Chocolatito Gonzalez and Cecilia Braekhus.

The Cork 33-year-old is being lined up for the winner of the main event – especially should stablemate Alvarez emerge victorious.

O’Sullivan’s manager and coach Paschal Collins had stated earlier in the Summer that a big name opponent had been secured for the Leesider before Lemieux, who is also promoted by Golden Boy, started calling for the fight.

The Mahon man had previously called for a clash with Lemieux but ended up scoring a career-best win over Antoine Douglas on the undercard of the Montreal fighter’s unsuccessful challenge of WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders.

With this rejection fresh in his mind, O’Sullivan would admit that he was not overly keen on facing Lemieux but he has seemingly had a change of heart.

O’Sullivan, following a protracted saga with WBC and WBA champ Golovkin, last fought in May, easily defeating Berlin Abreu in California.

Three weeks later, Lemieux made his return from the Saunders loss when he outpointed Karim Achour in a bout he badly missed weight for.
