Irish semi-pro champion to turn over

A top kickboxer and the current Irish welterweight semi-pro champion is to enter the pro ranks.

Dubliner Stephen McAfee will make the move, and is currently considering his options ahead of a Summer debut.

A varied fighting background has seen the Sallynoggin boxer win multiple titles in kickboxing as well as the Celtic Box Cup Senior B title last year.

Just last month, at Stradrook Rugby Club, McAfee outpointed Karl Kelly over eight two-minute rounds to become the first Irish champion in Jay Byrnes ‘Semi-Pro Boxing Ireland’ venture.

The 25 year old, coached by Jonathan Lewins, is the third boxer from Byrne’s semi-pro stable to make the next step to pro boxing, following Dylan McDonagh and James Cahill.
