Young James Tennyson still has “a lot to offer” – comeback title fight in the works

Defeated world title challenger James Tennyson [22(18)-3(3)] will jump straight back in in a title fight.

The Belfast puncher missed out on the chance to become Ireland’s 22nd world champion when a gallant performance in Boston wasn’t enough to trouble the talented IBF super featherweight king Tevin Farmer.

Bodyshots undid the Poleglass puncher who was dropped in the fourth and again in the fifth at the TD Garden with the bout being waved off immediately after the second knockdown, much to his team’s chagrin.

It is by no means the end, however, for Tennyson who won praise for his aggressive approach and desire.

‘The Assassin’ has bounced back from adversity before and can do so again claims his manager who, quite rightly, points out that, at just 25 years of age, things are only getting started for ‘Tenny’.

Indeed, the two-time Irish and former European champion will return in a title fight and look to rebuild from there.

Granted it’s not a world or European title fight for Tennyson’s return, but the super featherweight looks likely to come back in a Commonwealth defence which would prove a significant enough return.

A step up to lightweight had been suggested, but it seems as though Tennyson will remain at 130lbs for the time being, and his manager hints at more big fights in the pipeline.

“Knowing James he will be back in the gym in a few weeks, he has his Commonwealth Title to defend next year and I am in talks already about this,” Dunlop told Irish-Boxing.com before stressing fatherhood is Tennyson’s immediate priority.

“James will be a father soon so I think this his at his forefront.”

Dunlop was also keen to point out all the big punching super feather has achieved at such a young age.

Before any fighters even get going, the 25 year old has collected titles and reached world level – and with his peak ahead of him his manager predicts more big nights in the future.

“James Tennyson has had an incredible year and having only turned 25 eleven weeks ago, he has now fought for two Irish titles, a Celtic Title, a British title, a WBA International title, a Commonwealth title, a European titlem and the World title.”

“Most of his peers are in or nearing their 30s, its clear James still has a lot to offer.”
