World title assault planned for McGuinness

Logan McGuinness is ready to make an assault on the world scene at super featherweight.

The Canadian of Irish descent, who debuted in Limerick back in 2008, returns to the ring on St Patrick’s Weekend and he and his team hope to push up the 130lbs ladder quickly.

The 29 year old was ranked in the top five by the WBA as recently as 2015, however injuries and managerial issues sidelined the Orangeville fighter and saw him slide out of the rankings.

McGuinness [25(12)-0-1] returned to action last Autumn with two quickfire wins, and fights again on March 18th at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ontario where he headlines the “Boys Are Back In Town” event presented by Lee Baxter Promotions.

Here he will take on Argentine Horacio Alfredo Cabral [16(8)-1(1)] over ten rounds, and promoter Lee Baxter believes it is a tough final test for ‘Cotton’ before he moves into world title contention

“This is real fight, this isn’t a cakewalk meant to pad Logan’s record. This is an opponent who has built his record fighting and beating guys in a higher weight class,” said Baxter. “The winner of this fight can start thinking about title eliminators and world title shots.”

The division’s current champions are Vasyl Lomachenko (WBO), Jezreel Corrales (WBA), Gervonta Davis (IBF), and Miguel Berchelt (WBC), and this final name is the man that McGuinness and his team have their eye on.

“If I had a dream world title matchup I could make for Logan, it would be against Berchelt,” said Baxter. “His fight against Francisco Vargas was absolutely incredible, and Logan is the same kind of fighter as them. A blood and guts warrior who loves to fight on the inside. If you make that fight, HBO or any other network could guarantee their viewers another Fight of the Year contender.”

McGuinness is happy to be back fighting in his home province, and outlined how “It’s been almost three years since I fought in Ontario. Everyone knows about what I’ve been through, but the time off was nothing more than a rebirth. I can’t wait to get back in the ring on home soil.”
