Saturday night saw the draft gala in Monaco for the inaugural season of the World Boxing Super Series.

16 boxers across the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions will compete for a combined prize pool of $50,000,000 in a single elimination tournament.

The quarter finals at both weights begin in September, with semis in early January, and the finals taking place next May.

There is Irish representation at cruiserweight in the form of Cuban Mike Perez [22(14)-2(1)-1].

The formerly world rated heavyweight calls Ireland and Cork his home, and ‘The Rebel’ is looking to make waves since slimming down to cruiserweight.

Perez challenges for the WBC title in his opening bout, taking on champion Mairis Briedis after being chosen by the Latvian #3 seed.

In what will be just his second fight at the weight, the Cork-Cuban is an underdog, coming in anywhere between 11/4 and a market best of 16/5 with Betway.

Briedis is 2/9 with most of the bookies offering odds (Paddy Power, Betfair, SkyBet), while the draw comes in at 25/1 (general).

Swindon-Donegal super middleweight Jamie Cox [23(13)-0] competes in the comparatively weaker – although still extremely intriguing – 168lbs section of the tournament.

He opens his account against WBA champion and #1 seed George Groves.

‘The Wrecking Machine’ Cox, highly rated by many in the know, is 4/1 with BetVictor to upset the Londoner.

Groves, trained by Irishman Shane McGuigan, is 1/4 with Paddy Power to defend his title, while the draw can be had at 25/1 (general).

In terms of outright betting, Perez is sixth favourite to win the eight-man cruiserweight bracket, coming in at 25/1 with Paddy Power.

WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk is an odds-on 10/11 to win the tournament with BetVictor.

The other fighters are priced as follows:
Murat Gassiev – 5/1 (BetVictor)
Mairis Briedis – 11/2 (Paddy Power)
Yunier Dorticos – 10/1 (Paddy Power)
Dmitry Kudryashov – 16/1 (Paddy Power)
Krzysztof Wlodarczyk – 50/1 (Paddy Power)
Marco Huck – 66/1 (Paddy Power)

In the super middleweight bracket, Cox is positioned as fifth favourite, priced at 16/1 with BetVictor.

Favourite at 168lbs is Liverpudlian Callum Smith who starts off at 13/8 (general).

The remainder of the field are priced as follows:
George Groves – 2/1 (Paddy Power)
Chris Eubank Jr – 7/2 (Paddy Power)
Juergen Braehmer – 14/1 (BetVictor)
Avni Yildrim – 18/1 (BetVictor)
Erik Skoglund – 33/1 (general)
Rob Brant – 40/1 (Paddy Power)
