Jono Carroll [17(3)-1-1] believes he would be taking a step back if he was to fight Irish super featherweight champion Eric Donovan [10(6)-0-0].Ā

Kildare’s Donovan had proposed a fight between the two popular Irish fighters recently, but ‘King Kong’ claims he has his sights set on bigger names.

The Irish champion made the proposal upon hearing the recent world title challengers opponent for the undercard of Andy Ruiz Jr versus Anthony Joshua had pulled out.

Donovan offered to step in and take the place of the injured Scott Quigg on the massive Saudi Arabia hosted fight night.

‘Lilywhite Lightning’ felt he was a strong enough name to step in, was confident of victory and was sure the match up would entertain.

ā€œI think it would be an intriguing fight, all action fighter versus a stylish and slick boxer. I think it would have everything, in terms of movement, power, skill, guts, heart, balls, intelligence, it will sway from time to time, it will have many chapters Iā€™m pretty sure of that,ā€ he told Irish-boxing.com.

However, Carroll didn’t seem to agree entirely. The southpaw is keen to get back to the world stage and doesn’t feel the former amateur standout would facilitate that regard.

Possibly an instinctive response from a fighter that was just handed some bad news with regard to a massive fight on a massive card – and when the social media conversation continued, Carroll was a little more complimentary.

Donvan will next be in the ring next Saturday [November 23rd], taking a trip across the Irish Sea to box on a Kynoch Boxing card in Glasgow.

While it appears as if the charismatic Carroll will have to wait till the New Year to fight again after his Saudi clash was cancelled.
