It was a successful weekend for Irish boxers in England with four wins for prospects and two points defeats for journeymen.

Most of the action came on Friday, with the main focus being on Banks’s Stadium in Walsall where Navan super middleweight Chris Blaney scored a four-round points (40-36) win over Lithuanian Kirill Psonko in a short notice fight. The Ginger Ninja stretched his record to 2(2)-0 and the fight-hungry Meath man will be in action again in Stoke on October 1st.

In Manchester there were two wins from two for Wild Geese at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre on a Kieran Farrell-promoted show. Irish Tommy Carter grabbed his maiden professional victory with a hard-fought (40-37) win over debutant Nick Golubs. The middleweight of Drogheda descent now sits at 1(0)-1(0). Carter now goes on the road and is back in action, and stepping up to six rounds, on September 23rd in Essex against Tey Lynn Jones [4(0)-0]

Matty Mainwaring, former Irish underage international footballer, also had a win on the same. The 26 year old had a comfortable four-round (40-36) points victory over the rugged Liam Griffiths to move to 3(0)-0.

Ulster journeymen Casey Blair and Jamesy Gorman both lost on points in Leeds at Elland Road against Steven Mennell and Lee McGhie respectively.

On Saturday the only Irishman in action was the ludicrously talented Anto Cacace who became the first man to stop Jamie Quinn in 32 fights. The Celtic super featherweight champion is now 14(7)-0 and is hoping to fight for the British title in his next bout.
