Weekend Round-up September 15th-17th: Results and Fight Video

It was a decent weekend for Irish boxers, with two major returns to the ring.

On Thursday night Belfast feather Marco McCullough made his comeback following his Commonwealth title loss to Isaac Lowe. Having recently signed with MGM, the Shankill Road man made his bow on a dinner show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow. Here he comfortably outpointed Lithuanian Simas Volosinas (60-54) over six rounds and moved to 15(9)-3(2)

On Friday however there were four losses, with Northern journeymen Alec Bazza, Jamesy Gorman, and Casey Blair all losing, Bazza narrowly so, out in Scotland. Meanwhile, down in in Bournemouth, Irish Tommy Carter lost to MH Legg and dropped to 1(0)-2(0).

There was Irish interest at the huge Murphy’s Boxing card at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford on Saturday night. Headlining the card was the return of Spike O’Sullivan. The Cork middleweight had a tough comeback fight with Jaime Barboza but knocked the Costa Rican down in the sixth and took a wide eight-round points win (78-74 x2, 79-72) and improve his ledger to 23(15)-2(1).

On the undercard on the US East Coast there was a big stoppage win for O’Sullivan’s Celtic Warrior team-mate Steve Collins Jr. The Dublin light heavyweight put Christiano Pedro out for the count in the second to move to 9(4)-0-1.
