Weekend Preview: December 9th-10th

The year is drawing to a close, but the action continues for Irish boxers across the globe who are looking to round their respective 2016s off with a win.

Starting us off on Friday morning is Oughterard’s Gearoid Clancy [6(1)-4(0)]. The Sydney-based lightweight fights over six at the Horden Pavilion against Akrapong Nakthaem [17(5)-21(10)]. It is an important fight for the Galwegian as it is believe that a win here will see him authorised to fight Paul Hyland Jr for the Irish title in Belfast in February.

On Saturday at the Liquid & Envy Nightclub in Portsmouth there is a big fight for Miles Shinkwin [13(7)-1(1)]. The London-Cork light heavy fights for the vacant BBBoC English title against home favourite Joel McIntyre [14(3)-1(0)]. The clash is a repeat of the pair’s BBBoC Southern Area scrap in 2014 which was won by Shinkwin on points (97:95).

Featuring on the undercard in the south of England is Pompey-Belfast welter Michael McKinson [9(1)-0]. ‘The Problem’ fights Duane Green [4(0)-21(1)-4] over six rounds.

There is Irish interest on the big Anthony Joshua v Eric Molina pay-per-view at the Manchester Arena. Amateur boxing legend Katie Taylor [1(1)-0] takes a step up in her second fight to face Brazilian-Swiss lightweight Viviane Obenauf [9(4)-1(0)] over six twos.

Cork-Jamaican Dillian Whyte [19(15)-1] also defends his British heavyweight title on the card, taking on Dereck Chisora [26(18)-6(2)] in a bad-blood grudge match.

Finally there is a British light heavyweight title shot for former Celtic Warriors fighter and friend of the site Frank Buglioni who fights champion Hosea Burton.

Stateside, on the big Terence Crawford v John Molina Jr card, there is an undercard appearance for Navan-New York light heavy Seanie Monaghan [27(17)-0]. The world title-chasing Irish Seanie fights Fernand Castaneda [24(15)-11(6)] on the bill at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
