Wee Rooster wins massive War to Qualify for the Olympics

The ‘Wee Rooster’ was crowing with delight in Turkey this afternoon as the he qualified for the Rio 2016.

Brendan Irvine defeated Daniel Asenov of Bulgaria in the flyweight box-off for the 31st Olympiad.

The Belfast teen suffered  semi-final defeat to Narek Abgaryan on Friday, but overcame the disappointment to secure passage to Rio by winning a last chance saloon encouther.

Asenov came out guns blazing and took the first round, but with so much at stake the Irvine wasn’t going to be out gunned and came out firing. He pipped the second before winning the third to secure a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 win.

The St Paul’s BC (Antrim) ace now joins Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward on the plane to Rio.
