Watch: Joe Ward’s debut – Moate man loses in freak circumstances

Joe Ward suffered shock defeat in New York last night.

Ireland’s most decorated amateur boxer was debuting in Madison Square Garden on the undercard Gennady Golovkin’s vacant IBF middleweight title clash with Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Marco Delgado provided tough debut opposition, but Ward was expected to secure victory.

After a calm and dominant first round it looked as if the Moate BC graduate would ease his way into life as a pro with a routine win.

However, a second round injury forced Ward out of the fight and as things stand the Westmeath fighter has lost his first pro fight.

The 25-year-old dislocated his knee whilst stepping back to avoid a punch and the referee awarded the fight to the California native.
