Warren: Williams-Corcoran winner will move towards World title fight

Queensbury Promotions chief Frank Warren has labeled the upcoming clash between London-Irishman Gary Corcoran and Wales’s Liam Williams as “what boxing is all about.”

The light middleweight duo, between whom there is no love lost, will come to blows on July 16th at the Cardiff Ice Arena for Williams’s British and Commonwealth belts on a card that also features Jamie Conlan, Tyrone McKenna, and Gary Sweeney.

Veteran promoter Warren lauded his two charges for taking the fight, noting how “too many boxers are focused on the preservation of their treasured ‘0’ and are not prepared to take a risk. These two didn’t require any thinking time before signing on the dotted line.”

While Williams is a 1/3 favourite, with Corcoran a 9/4 underdog, Warren feels that it is a pick’em match-up, arguing that “this is such a hard fight to call and to say it is a 50-50 perhaps doesn’t do it justice.”

With Corcoran and Williams ranked #5 and #13 respectively with the WBO, the Hall of Fame promoter also points to the potential World title ramifications of the clash, explaining how “both fighters, naturally, have an eye on the full WBO world title in the possession of Liam Smith [whom Warren also promotes].”

“Winning this would certainly be a step in the right direction.”
