Walsh has to settle for silver after controversial Nicola Adams defeat

BELFAST’S Michaela Walsh’s bid for Commonwealth Gold was halted by a woman who knows a thing or two about boxing prospecting, Nicola Adams.

However the Olympic Champion only claimed victory in controversial circumstances, after Walsh produced the kind of display that had a host of people claiming Northern Ireland’s first female Commonwealth medal should have been gold rather than silver.

The 20 year old flyweight only lost out to the ‘boxing star of the games’ on a contested split decision.

Walsh, a three time Irish champion, certainly wasn’t overawed early on, but was pipped in the opening stanza as Adam’s work was that bit cleaner.

The Belfast fighter continued to press in round two finding her range with a series of aggressive combinations, before Adams reasserted her authority in round three.

There was little between them going into the final chapter and when the final bell went both Walsh and her support clearly believed she had done enough to secure gold.

Adams, however, was given the nod via a split decision, but her wild celebrations were further proof of how close the contest was.
