VOTE: The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – SEPTEMBER


September was a brilliant month for Irish boxing.

Two big shows at home, big wins away, fantastic comebacks, and major international medals.

A ridiculously hard month to pick a winner in, we have nine nominees for September.

Thus far all three winners have been amateurs (Joe Ward, Kane Tucker, and Michaela Walsh), and there are fighters from both codes in the running this month.

Public votes will be used alongside the choices of a panel of judges to determine the winner. Voting closes Wednesday at midnight with results being announced Thursday morning.

And the nominees are:

Regan Buckley
Bray
Flyweight
The ambitious 20 year old jumped up in weight to take on super bantam prospect Carl McDonald in a heated chief support bout at ‘Celtic Clash 3’ in Dublin. The Wicklow youngster scored a decisive six-round win, making a name for himself in the process.

Eric Donovan
Athy
Featherweight
Lilywhite Lightning claimed his first pro title in the ‘Celtic Clash 3’ headliner, putting on a boxing clinic against Welsh champ Dai Davies to win the BUI Celtic belt. Donovan would be honoured with a mural on the wall of the St Michael’s club later in the month.

Heavyweight
The Wexford Garda upset New England champion Alexis Santos in the headline fight of a big DiBella Entertainment bill at the Foxwoods Casino, outboxing the home favourite and claiming one of the biggest Irish heavyweight wins in recent times.

Anto Upton

Light Welterweight
In his first fight under coach Ray Ginley, Upton made a major statement on the Danger at The Devenish bill. In what was the fight of the night in Belfast, Upton went where few others have gone before and stopped the insanely tough Innocent Anyanwu in the sixth.

Welterweight
The Cinderella Story continued as the 39 year old Connemara veteran outfought recent British title challenger Shayne Singleton over 10 rounds on the Parker-Fury undercard to claim one of the best wins of his career.

Callum Walsh

Lightweight
The Riverstown teenager grabbed a glorious gold at the European Junior Championships in Albena, Bulgaria. The Rebel defeated Hungarian, German, Russian, and eventually Bulgarian opposition in a tense final to win top prize.

Dean Walsh
Wexford
Welterweight
The 2017 Elite Senior champion missed out on the Europeans and Worlds after not fulfilling training requirements. Walsh however got himself focused and came back strong, captaining Ireland in their Elite International with Poland, where he claimed an impressive win in his bout with Kamil Holka

Caoimhin Agyarko Hynes
Belfast
Middleweight
Less than five months on from being stabbed and almost losing his life, Agyarko Hynes returned to the ring in Barcelona. The Belfast youngster claimed two wins to top the podium at the Il Torneo Internacional De La Amistad, completing a remarkable comeback and readying himself for next months Ulsters.

The Celtic Warriors man topped a Golden Boy on ESPN bill in Boston and put on his best performance in years, pummeling England’s Nick Quigley into submission and claiming a fourth round stoppage win.
