‘Vanilla Gorilla’ Dee Sullivan hints at retirement after early career knockout

Dee Sullivan [1-1(1)] admits he is considering his future after just two pro fights.

In fact the Belfast crusierweight claims he is leaning toward calling it a day after being stopped on the massive #MTKFightNight event at Feile an Phobail.

‘The Vanilla Gorilla’ was meant to open the show in style and despite being handed somewhat of an unknown quantity was expected to defeat precieved journey man opposition.

However, it was Mateusz Kubiszyn [3(2)-1(0)] who drew noise from a relatively sizable five o’clock crowd at the Falls Park.

The Pole, who came to the fight with a winning record, but on the back of his first defeat which came in his first fight outside of his home country, forced the watching hundreds to gasp as he dropped the local heavy.

The 28-year-old forced his fellow cruiserweight to retreat to the ropes with a well timed right hand and piled on the pressure.

SUllivan tucked up in a bid to buy time to recover, but got caught again and was never going to beat the count.

The big man left the ring smiling and seems to have taken the defeat on the chin. However, speaking on social media has suggested he is leaning toward retiring just three months after his pro debut.

Retirement talk is often a go to response for those that suffer such defeat, but it has to be noted that as time passes minds change.

It should also be noted that there are those that have suffered such reverses early doors only to bounce back and forge successful careers.

Bernard Hopkins and Tevin Farmer are the go to names in that regard of late, but there are examples closer to home that may inspire Sullivan.

James Tennyson was shocked by Pavels Senkovs on the night he was meant to progressed from small hall to arena and is now mid one of the more successful careers.

‘The Assassin’ went on to win the EBU European title before challenging the aforementioned Farmer for his IBF world title.

Anthony Fitzgerald was also stopped on a Bernard Dunne undercard by Janis Cernauskis straight after a points defeat to Robbie Long and came back to claim an Irish title and share the ring with the likes of Hassan N’Dam, Andy Lee and Spike O’Sullivan.
