Two through, two out at World Youth Championships

Top Pro Gif Ad
Michael Nevin and Gabriel Dossen progressed to the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg today, but there was disappointment for Limerick duo Paddy Donovan and Kevin Sheehy.

Middleweight Nevin, constantly changing the point of attack, dominated the first two rounds of his 75kg contest with France’s Moreno Fendero with simple but very effective head combinations against his up tempo opponent.

Nevin switched to the body in the third, the Portlaoise BC man finding the target, once with a sensational eight punch combination, en route to the last-eight on a 30-27 x 4, 30-26 verdict.

Galway light welter Gabriel Dossen ended the Cinderella Story of Hugo MiCallef from Monaco, dominating their bout and taking a comprehensive win to make the last eight.

St Francis’s super heavyweight Sheehy took on World Junior champ Mahammad Abdullayev of Azerbaijan. In what was his international debut, Sheehy put in a game performance but was overcome by unanimous decision.

OLOL lightweight Donovan seemed to get the better of his Azeri opponent Sarkhan Aliyev off the back foot, but was adjudged to have lost a split decision.
