“No better man” – Tommy McCarthy excited by new link-up following tough 2018

Tommy McCarthy [11(6)-1(0)] is ready to put a disappointing 2018 behind him and get back into big fights.

The Belfast cruiserweight has not fought yet this year but was last night confirmed to have linked up with manager and promoter Mark Dunlop.

McCarthy, who left MTK Global due to inactivity, will now look to get busy and back into big fights – with Dunlop having proven himself in recent years as the Irish manager most adept at securing fighters opportunities and navigating the domestic scene.

Despite not fighting this year, the talented Lenadoon man has spent time sparring with world-level names in the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions and is confident that Dunlop will guide him to big fights in the near future.

McCarthy outlined how “Mark Dunlop is my new manager and there’s no better man for the job.”

“I really believe in him and I’m excited about 2019.”

“It’s been a shit year for me as regards to boxing but I’ve had great experiences in the camps I’ve been to sparring with the best in the world,” he added, referencing time spent in the camps of Mairis Briedis, Carlos Takam, Beibut Shumenov, and Hughie Fury among others.

The cruiserweight scene in Britain and Ireland is booming currently. Matchroom’s Lawrence Okolie is currently the British king while the Commonwealth belt will be contested by Wadi Camacho and Arfan Iqbal next month. Then there is also a clash between Isaac Chamberlain and Luke Watkins this weekend while the only man to defeat McCarthy, Matty Askins, remains in the mix.

‘The Mac Attack’ is desperate for big fights and confident he will achieve them under Dunlop, stating that “I fully believe 2019 is my year, big time.”

Dunlop said that “I’m delighted that Tommy McCarthy has given me the job of guiding his boxing career.”
