Tommy Casey – “I’m going to keep the name of the Caseys going!”

First there was Willie ‘Big Bang’ Casey, who won Prizefighter super bantamweights followed by the European title. Then there was his younger brother Myles, who won the 2015 Elite flyweight title. Now their nephew Tommy has become the latest fighting Casey to have success in the ring.

A newcomer to the sport, the 21 year old bantamweight won the National Senior (Intermediate) title on Friday night, edging Paulstown’s Shane Flavin via split decision (29:28 x2, 28:29) after a three-round war

In what was a heavy-hitting fight, Casey was given the nod over the talented former underage star, much to the chagrin of the Kilkenny boxer’s corner  who felt their man deserved the decision.

Casey spoke to Irish-Boxing.com following the win and explained how “at the beginning of the fight I knew he was going to be a tricky lad. He was that bit younger so I knew I was going to have the strength over him, so we went with the game plan to push him back as I had that natural strength.”

“He was a tough opponent, a bit tricky, he tried to draw me on a bit, but I didn’t rush in. I landed some pretty big shots, pushed him back most of the fight, and the game plan worked so thanks to Ken Moore [coach] for that.”

The Limerick fighter’s rise up the ranks has been meteoric, and he revealed that “this time last year I was lucky to even get a fight.”

“I’ve only been in boxing the last two years on and off, but the last seven or eight months I was with St Francis’s and that’s when I knew I wanted to box properly. Ken Moore took me in and we worked on stuff. I was more of a scrapper, a very wild fighter, and he took me under his wing and showed me how to box and showed me a lot of technique, and today it payed off.”

“I’ve only had seven fights, eight now including this one here. This is my first time in Dublin and I walked away with an Irish title, and there’s plenty of other titles in me.”

Still a relative novice in boxing, Casey therefore may not feature in next year’s Senior Elites, but he plans to keep fighting and keep winning. He outlined how “I’ve had no losses, all wins, thank God. There’s the under-22s, that’s first in January, I’ll be definitely going to that.”

“I’m going to keep the unbeaten record going. I’m going to keep the name of the Caseys going.”
