TJ Doheny talks comeback fight – wants high-level opponent

TJ Doheny [21(15)-1(0)] warns that the best has yet to come and claims he will be back on top in no time.

The Portlaoise native lost his IBF super bantamweight world title after a tense, tight and entertaining clash with Danny Roman as recently last month, but is already plotting a return to the top and is promising that the ‘best is yet to come’.

‘The Power’ wants to return no later than September and is determined to come back against an opponent that will enable him to entertain and a name that will put him back in the world title picture.

The Sydney-based Irish fighter has asked his team to secure him top-end opposition as he bids to become a two time world champion within a year.

“I have spoken to my team and want to be out no later than September. I want to keep the momentum going now,” Doheny told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I lost but there was nothing in that fight and I feel the best is yet to come. I will be back on top in no time.”

Doheny got massive respect for not sitting on his title and choosing unification over some routine and potentially lucrative defences -and when going into more detail on what kind of opponent he would like next it seems giving to the fans remains a priority.

The southpaw wants an opponent who will come to win and one with a reputation that will move him toward another title tilt.

“I have told my team I want high level opponents with exciting styles that are going to impress the fans, but also put me back in contention to challenge for another world title.

“MTK Global have done so much for me to date and I have no doubt I will be challenging for a World Championship within 12 months.”

Derry fighter Tyrone McCullagh is one fighter only too keen to take on the Portlaoise BC graduate.

‘White Chocolate’ has upped his calls for the clash going as far as to suggest it would be an ideal fit for the undercard of Michael Conlan’s August Belfast return.

Doheny doesn’t seem to think his managerial stablemate fits the criteria he has laid out and, when pushed on the call-out, he labelled McCullagh ‘delusional’.”

“Delusional is probably the best response I can come up with right now but god love him at least he’s trying.”
