Bob Arum and Jermell Herring left the potential three weight world champion door a jar for Carl Frampton post making a successful defence of his super featherweight world title on Sunday.

The Marine veteran defeated mandatory challenger Lamont Roach Jr on Veterans Day weekend to retain his WBO super featerweight title.

The 2012 US Olympian registered a 17-111, 117-111 and 115-113 victory to register the first successful defence of his title.

Pre the bout Herring had been name dropped as a potential future Frampton foe by Top Rank’s Bob Arum and both fighters expressed an openness to it.

There were more names raised and options discussed post the win on Sunday, but Frampton is still in the frame.

The champion wants a big fight or unification next. He mentioned unifications with either Miguel Berchelt or Andrew Cancio or a showdown with ‘The Jackal’.

Arum, who promotes Herring, Berchelt and Frampton, told ESPN he will try to accommodate Marine.

“Berchelt is certainly available and we also have Frampton, so that’s another big fight,” Arum said. “Cancio, that’s no problem. We made [Herring-Roach] with Golden Boy and we can make a deal with them for Cancio as well. I want to get [Herring] a big fight. He’s such a lovely kid and a real pleasure to work with. So those are all big fights. Hopefully, well be able to do something in the first quarter of next year.”

If Frampton was indeed to move to super featherweight and successfully secure Herring’s WBO world title he would become Ireland’s first ever three weight world champion.

The world title keen Belfast fighter will have a number of options available to him in the New Year, but he first must overcome Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas on November 30.

The Jamie Moore trained fighter takes on the American in his first fight just under a year.
