Aaron McKenna moved to within touching distance of double figures in terms of wins last night.

The Monaghan 20-year-old made it nine straight wins since turning over in December of 2017 with victory in Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio in California on Thursday night (Local time).

The LA based fighter out pointed Mexican born Sergio Lucio over six rounds on the ESPN+ broadcast card.

The Golden Boy prospect was too good for Lucio, looked the more physically imposing and had more skill to consult.

As a result he managed a shut out victory with all three scoring judges scoring the fight 60-54 in his favour.

McKenna, who was Ireland’s youngest pro boxer until James Power, who is now training alongside him in LA, arrived on the scene has only fought one fighter with a losing record and Lucio came into the fight with more wins that defeats.

However, his last win came in the Summer of 2017 and he is now seen more as a test for prospects than anything else.

Regardless, McKenna got the job done and the active Sheer Sports managed welter/light middle continues to progress toward bigger fights.

McKenna’s brother Stevie, who works and trains alongside his brother Stateside under the guidance of former South African heavy Courage Tshabalala and hall of fame coach Robert Garcia is out early next month.

The older of the boxing brothers has impressed with three early knockouts from three fights so far and will be looking to continue the victory streak when fights on November 11.

‘The Hitman’ takes on Argentinian Gonzalo Carlos Dallera at Garden Casino, Hawaiian Gardens.
