Sweeney sets his sights on ‘big boys’ as he prepares for ring return

Gary Sweeney is on the verge of a ring return and is looking forward to getting into the cruiserweight mix.

The younger brother of former Irish title challenger Michael Sweeney made a blistering start to pro life with three knock out wins within five months of a May 2016 debut.

However, was a year out of the ring before he registered his fourth win, knocking out  Imantas Davidaitis in December of 2017.

It went quiet again on ‘The Gallant’ front after that victory and the 24 year old hasn’t fought since.

However, the Ballinrobe fighter, who has three first round knockouts to his name already, is on the mend from an abscess on his coccyx and is readying himself to move make waves in an exciting division.

“Gary is currently out injured and we will know in a few weeks when he’s going to be back. I know people are wondering,” said older brother and coach Michael.

“I can’t wait until he’s back in the ring and after a few more fights, we’ll be looking for a title and to take on the big boys in the cruiserweight division.”

Sweeney made his debut in May 2016 when he blew Mario Lakatos away in Bolton and was last seen in December 2017 when recording an equally impressive annihilation of Imantas Davidaitis.

Hailing from a boxing family that includes three older brothers who all claimed titles in Mayo County, Sweeney earned a European Youth silver medal at the age of 17 and is aiming for greater success as a professional.
