Super Sunday – Ireland guarantee FIVE bronze medals at European Youth Championships

A sensational Sunday saw Ireland guarantee five more bronze medals for the European Youth Championships in Italy.

Irish female captain Lauren Kelly, Evelyn Igharo, Daina Moorehouse, Judge Gallagher and Dearbhla Rooney joined Sligo flyweight Dean Clancy, who won yesterday, in the semi-finals in Roseto.

The six are assured podium finishes and will be back in action, after a rest day tomorrow, on Tuesday looking to upgrade to silver.

Team captain Lauren Kelly turned in a composed performance to beat Turkey’s Sena Erdogan to guarantee a second successive European Youth middleweight medal and a third piece of continental silverware overall.

Evelyn Igharo and Jude Gallagher had both missed out on European Junior medals last year after split-decision losses but claimed their maiden podium places today

Louth light welter Igharo blasted out Croatian Antia Zilix in the first round while Tyrone light fly Gallagher came through a fire-fight with Armenian Seyran Yeghikyan.

European Junior gold medalist Daina Moorehouse dominated Spaniard Marta Lopez to ensure light flyweight bronze in the older class while international debutant Dearbhla Rooney edged past Croatian Nikolina Cacic to win featherweight bronze.

There was disappointment though for Kilkenny bantam Brandon McCarthy who lost out to Albanian Muhamet Qamili on a curious 3-2 split decision.

The St Michael’s Athy teen won 30-27 and 30-26 on two cards, but lost 29-28 on the other three.
