Stephen Ormond announces boxing retirement

We have seen ‘The Rock’ roll into a pro ring for the last time, Stephen Ormond has retired from professional boxing.

The Clondalkin fighter lost in a rematch with Craig Evans in Cardiff last night and announced his retirement after the defeat.

Ormond looked fit and was competitive in the WBO European ranking title fight, but hasn’t reached the high standards he sets himself and ultimately hung up his gloves within hours of the reverse.

After such a defeat a rebuild would have been needed and at 36 years of age that appears unwanted and the respected operator bows out.

The Dubliner, routinely described as one of the fittest and hardest trainers in the sport, finished strong against Evans and there was a degree of controversy about the result which goes down as the latest hard-to-stomach loss for the unassuming Celtic Warriors man.

Ormond himself did not cry foul after the verdict and announced his decision to hang them up on social media.

He said that “it’s been a long road ups & downs, but I loved the journey. I said If I get beat tonight I will retire. Thanks to my corner Paschal [Collins], Mark [Kennedy], and Daniel [O’Sullivan] over years and to [wife] Jodie all the years by my side. I love you and my kids.”

“It’s time to live a normal life.”

Ormond leaves the sport with a record of 27(13)-6(1).

Irish-Boxing.com wishes Stephen all the best in retirement.
