Shannon Sweeney ready to use technique to beat tenacious Daina Moorehouse

Shannon Sweeney wants to go from watching the rise of Dania Moorehouse to stopping it tonight.

Like the Mayo light flyweight, Moorehouse is also a decorated youth graduate.However, unlike the Westport amateur this is the teens first Elite rodeo.

Yet while she may be a fresh face for those who don’t religiously follow the amateur code, the Enniskerry pocket rocket has been clocked by Sweeney before.

The 2018 Elite winner, who knocked out reigning champion Chloe Fleck on Wednesday night, is aware of her opponent and her talents – and is determined to stint her progress albeit temporarily as the pair meet in the 48kg final tonight.

“I’ve watched Daina Moorehouse, she is a good girl. I know her from the Europeans and I have seen her rise. It should be a good fight and I am exciting to deal with what she brings,” she told Irish-boxing.com.

“She is a busier boxer and she is very fast so it’s going to take good technique to make sure I win- and luckily I have that. I am confident in myself, but all you can promise people is you will give it your best shot.”

Sweeney needed her skill set to deal with a more aggressive than normal Fleck on Wednesday. She wasn’t too pleased with her display, suggesting she would have liked a slower paced fight.

However, she did get a win over a champion and can take from that.

“It wasn’t my best performance. I can definitely give and do more. She kept coming and coming and I don’t always like that, but I went with her. I boxed her before and she stood off, but tonight she really went for it, but I held out and got the win.

“She is the reigning champion so it is a good win. I wasn’t here last year for the Elites, I was in Canada, but still she is the champion and I got the win,” he continued before reverting her attention back to the final.

“We just move forward now and I’ll be ready for Friday.”
