Ohara Davies launches online attack at Shane McGuigan

Rising English light welterweight Ohara Davies [14(11)-0] has today launched a scathing online attack at Irish trainer Shane McGuigan.

The 28 year old coach, who became the youngest lead trainer of a world champion in boxing history in September 2014 when Carl Frampton defeated Kiko MartΓnez for the IBF super bantamweight title, was subject to aspersions cast on both his boxing and financial backgrounds as well as accusations of being disrespectful to fighters.

At the weekend Davies hit back at McGuigan, who had criticised the Sky Sports commentators for excessively praising the London 140lber during his dominant win over Andrea Scarpa on Saturday night at the Wembley Arena.

It is unknown what led Davies to begin his rant today, although it is assumed that the comments come after McGuigan’s appearance at the David Haye v Tony Bellew press conference which took place this afternoon. McGuigan is the current trainer of former two-weight world champion Haye.

Davies took aim at McGuigan’s education at the fee-paying Millfield School and his privileged upbringing as the son of former WBA featherweight champion and boxing hall of famer Barry McGuigan.

Any argument Davies may have been making would self-implode however when he claimed McGuigan had never been in the ring. The Battersea-based trainer, of course, won the Ulster Senior and Irish Under-21 titles in 2008.

In fact, in total, McGuigan has been in more official fights than Davies himself, who only participated in 17 contests before turning pro.

The outburst is also most likely linked to the fact that McGuigan trains former Scottish amateur star Josh Taylor [7(7)-0]. Many drew comparisons between the pair when Taylor won the Commonwealth title in just his seventh fight, demolishing Dave Ryan. Davies would later turn his attentions to the Prestonpans fighter, seemingly citing his own lightly regarded WBC Silver trinket as a superior title to the Commonwealth belt.

McGuigan’s Gym fighter Frampton also hit back at Davies, picking Taylor to triumph were the two to ever meet.
