Shane McGuigan believes Barry would have been more successful if he had trained him

Like most sons Shane McGuigan would have loved the chance to tell his Dad what to do!

The former Ulster Champion has proved himself as one of the best young coaches in the World via his work with two-weight World champion Carl Frampton. The 27 year old has also proved that he has no qualms working with megastar fighters who are years his senior having teamed up with David Haye, and he claims that he would have loved to had coached his father.

The reasoning isn’t just sentimental, the youngest of the McGuigan sons, all of whom work with Cyclone Promotions, believes his legendary World title-winning father would have achieved a lot more.

Barry McGuigan won the WBA title in 1985, defeating the legendary Eusebio Pedroza at Loftus Road, and would successfully defend the belt twice. The Clones Cyclone was later voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Explaining his reasoning to Squaremile, McGuigan described how “I’d have loved to have trained my dad. Because he’s family, but also because I believe I could have helped him achieve a lot more than he did.”

“He didn’t achieve what he could have, in all honesty. That was to do with managerial problems and stuff like that, but he didn’t have a lot of science behind his training.”

“I think I could have helped him bring a little more out of himself.”
