Señor Matt Wilton targeting British title in 2017

Matt Wilton‘s record now stands at an attractive-looking 15-0, and the Belfast welterweight is keen to be stepped up and moved into British title contention.

In fact, with some top class training camps in Spain, Wilton believes that he can win the Lonsdale belt before 2017 is out.

The East Belfast welter defeated Lithuanian journeyman Arvydas Trizno on Saturday night at the Shorts Sports and Social Club on the Holywood road, easing to a six-round points win.

In terms of the fight itself, Wilton was not pushed too hard, but he revealed that he has been steadily improving abroad this last while.

“I thought it was handy enough,” he told Irish-Boxing.com. “It was more like a training session. I’ve had harder sparring. I’ve been in Spain for the last two weeks before the fight, sparred Sergio Abad a few times and I sparred that Luca Giacon [28(24)-1(1)] and he’s fighting for the IBF International title.”

“I got a good camp out of it. I’ll be going out to Spain again, sparring with champions.”

With Team Alio and Prospect Boxing having big plans for 2017, the 26 year old finally wants to be pushed up through the ranks.

“We’re going to pick it up again now,” he outlined. “My dad [Alio] says he’s going to run four shows this year. This is the first one of four then hopefully get on some McGuigan shows.”

“I want a British title this year, I want a British title shot. I shouldn’t be too far away. ”

“I’m twentieth or so in the ratings, and we were trying to get a good opponent, but apparently there were 17 shows or something this weekend so there was nobody. We only got him on Wednesday. We wanted to try nibble up the ratings but we couldn’t.”
